Do you love supporting women through their motherhood journey?
If you work with pregnant women, new mums and not so new mums, then you would know that becoming a mother is one of the most transformative experiences in a woman’s life. I’m sure you have noticed that the same themes emerge. Well I have too and really it shouldn’t come as a surprise given what the research tells us about the psychological process of pregnancy and motherhood.
I decided to bring all this research together, along with the amazing feedback from my clients, and developed The Conscious Mother. I began developing homework and handouts for my clients to take home so that they could further explore what we were doing in the therapy room. They loved it! Well not all. But most.
On top of that, many mums were really isolated – even if they had close family and friends around them. They were often asking me what other mums thought, felt and did, that I worked with. Their curiosity to know about other mothers’ experiences was almost insatiable. Again, I shouldn’t have been surprised. That need for connection and interest in how others are going is the foundation of mother’s groups!
So with all of this swirling around in my head for years, I finally decided that it might be worthwhile to develop a program. While my dream is for pregnant women and new mums to come participate (early intervention and all that), it is a program for all mums. In fact, at least half of my ‘beta testers’ were mums of primary school aged kids.
So I thought I’d better sit down and write the ‘proper’ manual; as you do when you’ve developed a therapy group. The intention was that other psychologists in my practices could also use it with their clients. But alas, the universe had other ideas because out came the book The Conscious Mother.
The book laid the foundation for the program which has since involved into The Retreat. As you know, individual and group therapy is WAY more powerful and effective than any self-help book. And so, the goal is to connect with psychologists who love walking side by side with women who are pregnant, new mums and not-so-new mums. These psychologists will want to be a part of a community for women to learn, grow, feel supported, be vulnerable, ask for help, provide help and overall, find their inner authentic mother.
You can read about me on the ‘About Me’ page. But in terms of The Conscious Mother itself, all parts of the Program are grounded in psychological theory, research and practice. My training and experience extends well-beyond clinical and forensic psychology and includes infant and maternal mental health, gestalt psychotherapy and attachment and acceptance and commitment therapies. This knowledge and skill has been applied over my 20+ year career where I have worked with clients at the ‘pointy-end’ (child protection, corrective services, family court) as well as everyday mothers, fathers and their children (perinatal mental health, adjustment to parenthood, blended / step families, working motherhood, family conflict). I am also a mother of 4 children, divorced and (happily) remarried and together my husband and I are foster parents.
The Conscious Mother is a powerful experience for women as they journey through motherhood. If you want to be a part of it, please contact me. I hope to hear from you.
